State law requires all cities to support and facilitate sidewalk vendors. Vending in the public right of way, parks and beaches is currently prohibited. In preparation for the new rules, the draft sidewalk vending ordinance will go before the City Council Ordinance Committee on August 3.

Why can’t they leave the choice to the people? You know, like getting a vaccination? If you want to take the risk and eat street food, that’s up to you. I have a feeling the “law and order” crowd are clamoring to support the prohibition on street food, while at the same time shrieking “my body, my choice” when it comes to mask and vaccine mandates…..
4:48 – No reason we can’t have food vendors in places with no restaurants. Restaurant owners can not and should not dictate what other businesses try to make a buck. If they’re worried about competition, they got to step it up! Free market, personally responsibility, capitalism, boot straps and all that!
Reminds me of. the rickshaw ordinance when that hazard was taking over downtown a few years ago – city slapped a liability insurance demand on any possible permits and that pretty much ended it. Plus, you cannot have unregulated food operations with NO available hand-washing stations for food handlers anywhere in this town. Remember how tortured the Oak Park Ethnic Festivals became – screened tents and strict food handling requirements – once public health imposed their mandates? Stop this illegal street vendor exploitation now, because like everything else this started small years ago and was ignored year after year despite complaints made to city council. So it grew into one more unacceptable public nuisance, invading all neighborhood sidewalks across this city. One system of justice, remember that city council? Stop trying to have it both ways. One more reason to get rid of the incumbents on council, who tolerated looking the other way as more and more neighborhoods were invaded and more and more complaints were filed.
We are not talking fiesta eggs or food trucks. It’s designed, I believe, to stop the increase of the fruit/candy vending carts that are popping up everywhere, blocking sidewalks and visibility for cars at intersections. I understand these “vendors” are tricked in daily from LA and are not paid or paid very little. The guys you see manning those carts are not the ones making any profit. I have even been told these poor guys selling these “treats” are mistreated and are terrified of being deported.
SB RON – We have, every weekend, fruit carts out near Winchester Dr. in Goleta and never once, not ever ONCE, have they obstructed my view at an intersection. That is just ridiculous. If you can’t see clearly in an intersection because of someone with a cart on the corner (or people standing there waiting to cross, etc) then that’s a YOU problem.
Just more people making excuses for their desire to rid our streets of any possible “immigrants.” Just leave them alone. If you don’t want to risk it, don’t eat. This is capitalism.
Wait. So you are actually advocating for the elimination of public health laws as well as zoning restrictions for businesses? Because, you “feel” bad for the immigrants? And this is what you call CAPITALISM? Quick! Someone get SACJON a lukewarm pork Torta w/ extra mayo and maybe a shrimp cocktail on the side… After all, everyone loves when Sammy comes to town. Surest way to lose 30lbs and maybe even a kidney! As long as you’re willing to spin the wheel of CAPITALISM!! Lol, Sac, you’re so confused, or maybe just overly emotional… not sure. Either way, you cannot have a market without rules and of course, punishment if one cheats, lies or steals. Tell us again why we should ignore the laws and instead allow certain people to cheat?
