Sanctuary Centers, a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to mental health and community wellness, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for their new five-story facility on Thursday.
The event will take place on December 14th from 3-6 p.m. at 115 West Anapamu Street in downtown Santa Barbara.
The new state-of-the-art facility aims to transform access to mental health resources and foster positive change in the community.

Schoer, president/CEO at Sanctuary Centers. “Our groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes the beginning of a transformative project that will provide essential services and offer a supportive environment for individuals to thrive.”
Sanctuary Centers believes that the integration of affordable housing and comprehensive healthcare services will tackle the complex challenges individuals with mental illnesses face. The new facility will be an innovative approach that will improve resident wellness and offer a holistic approach to healthcare.
The new facility will feature 34 units of affordable housing to address the critical need for housing in the community. Sanctuary Centers is committed to providing stable and secure housing options for individuals and families who require mental health services.
The facility will also house medical, dental, and behavioral health clinics, which will work together to promote overall well-being and address both physical and mental healthcare.
Designed with a focus on residential and client engagement, the building will offer various spaces for communal activities, shared dining experiences, events, and programs. This social interaction as well as education initiatives that will take place in these spaces will serve as support networks for community residents.

If this model of sustainable treatment for the seriously mentally ill population is successful, I hope that our state and federal governments will channel funding to duplicate it.
That’s great, but a tiny fraction of what is needed, especially for youth.
Is this a return to the facilities that were in place decades ago that were then forced to release the mentally ill onto the streets? “Sanctuary” does have a softer ring to it. I hope it can work.
Is it on Dec 14th (Thursday) or on Saturday (which is the 16th)? The first two paragraphs state both.
