“Samaritan” Debuts on This Week’s Streaming Charts

By Jane TV

What better way to coast through a heatwave than while watching tv and movies in the dark with a fan directly pointed at you. At least that’s how I’ll be avoiding this unsavory weather. There’s a lot of repetition on this week’s Top 10 Streaming Titles, compiled by Reelgood, so I’ll focus on the newcomers.

Sylvester Stallone’s superhero movie, Samaritan, breaks the streaming chart a week after its premiere. It follows the story of a young boy who learns that a superhero who was believed to have gone missing after a battle years ago, may still be around.

I haven’t watched this film and I’m not sure if I will, but it does remind me of a recent Los Angeles Times article that publicized the term “geezer teaser.” The article focuses on an allegedly corrupt producer who pays older action stars, aka geezers like Bruce Willis and Steven Segal, a large sum of money to star in low budget films that go straight to streaming or DVD. The movies are often sold overseas and turn quite a profit.

It makes me wonder if Stallone’s latest film is another rendition of a geezer teaser or if there’s some actual meat to it. If anyone has seen it, please comment below and let me know if it’s worth a watch.

Hulu has three titles on the list this week, including the new series Welcome to Wrexham and The Patient.

Welcome to Wrexham is a docu-series that follows the events of Welsh association football club Wrexham A.F.C., as told by the club’s owners and actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds. I haven’t started this yet but it’s on my list and I’m anticipating a light-hearted watch as both actors seem to be just as delightful off screen as they are on.

The Patient is a thriller mini-series that is gaining some decent reviews. Steve Carrell plays a therapist who is held captive by a serial killer, Domhnall Gleeson, who seeks help to curb his homicidal urges.

What I’m Watching: I’m still pretty absorbed into For All Mankind on Apple+, which is really good!, but I also started the Hulu documentary The Deep End that follows controversial spiritual influencer and author Teal Swan. Many critics suggest she’s actually leading a cult while her followers state the obivous. It’s a pretty interesting and disturbing watch.
