Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced [Friday] the sentencing of Donald Paul McCaffrey on misdemeanor charges of hit and run and resisting, obstructing, or delaying a law enforcement officer.
In July of 2016, McCaffrey, was involved in an accident and then ran from police during their investigation of the collision. Numerous Santa Barbara Police Department officers searched the area around Santa Barbara and Anapamu Streets for McCaffrey who evaded the police for approximately an hour before surrendering. On October 9, 2018 a jury convicted McCaffrey of all charges. McCaffrey was a retired law enforcement officer.
The Honorable Judge Hill, of the Santa Barbara Superior Court, then sentenced McCaffrey to 15 days in the county jail and three years of probation with multiple related terms and conditions including 50 hours of community work service.
Prosecuting Attorney Morgan Lucas expressed her appreciation to the jury and to her fellow public safety officers in stating: “We are here to uphold the law, not to use our knowledge of the law to evade responsibility for violating it.”
Media sure kept quiet on this one. Two years later after a jury trial 15 days comes down. They said he was under the influence, did that get dropped?
He obviously didn’t run and hide just because of a simple accident.
There is way more behind this. I agree an under the influence has been hidden and dropped here.

Misdemeanor charges. I don’t think anyone goes to federal pound-me-in-the-arse prison for misdemeanors…
The take away for me is that Police Officers walk a line everyday they go to work, maybe just as you do when YOU go to work, but perhaps they have a lot more at stake on a daily basis… The majority go home at the end of the day and deal / handle the crap they see and do, day in and day out. There are some that don’t handle it and have issues that affect their lives off the job. Bottom line- They are humans.
