Rescued Eagle Succumbs to Injuries

An injured Golden Eagle that was rescued by county firefighters last week passed away due to its injuries.

Firefighters responded to a report of an injured bird on Palmer Road near Sisquoc on Friday, October 9. Crews found an eagle that was unable to fly so they placed it in a cardboard box until it was transported to Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network in Goleta.

The eagle was dehydrated and experiencing seizures and body tremors when it arrived at the rescue center. Caregivers performed a series of tests and provided fluids and medication before placing the bird in a temperature-regulated enclosure where it passed overnight.

It’s unclear what the official cause of death is but the wildlife care network suspects it could be linked to trauma, toxicity, or possibly West Nile Virus.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will perform a necropsy to investigate the official cause of death.
