Be cautious using portable generators if you don’t know what you’re doing. They can easily create electrocution hazards due to grounding issues, fire hazards due to electrical connection and fuel storage issues, and carbon monoxide hazards due to exhaust gasses entering nearby buildings. That said, a properly installed generator can be a great help. Any qualified electrician can do the job right or inspect the work of an inexperienced DIY job.
