I hate to say it but there’s little difference between a DUI and an elderly impaired driver. My neighbor, 96, just went into a nursing home. She was driving up to last week. Unlike most elderly drivers, she was a speed demon. She had few cognitive abilities left and could barely walk or turn around without falling. Yet, she was driving. Another friend is 95, had a stroke that left her with impaired speech and mobility. I saw her at the grocery store last week and she didn’t see me standing right next to her. I can’t imagine how narrow her field of vision is. I think we need mandatory driving tests after 85. I will be there soon enough myself so I am not being ageist.
