California Independent System Operator (ISO) has declared a Stage 2 electrical emergency due to excessive heat driving up electricity use and putting a strain on the State’s electrical grid. During this emergency, if system conditions do not improve, the ISO may declare a Stage 3 Emergency, which they did last evening (August 14) through midnight. A Stage 3 emergency occurs when the ISO is unable to meet minimum contingency electricity reserve requirements.
Stage 3 emergencies usually occur during periods of prolonged, excessive heat that covers a large geographic area (such as statewide). During such conditions, air conditioning systems are used for long periods of time, which is often a major contributor to the power grid’s depletion.
During a Stage 3, the ISO can require electrical utilities to conserve power by turning off electrical services to customers, typically referred to as “rotating power outages.” Rotating power outages may occur at any time with no notice throughout the State, including Santa Barbara County. Such power outages may last anywhere between 1-2 hours.
Please note that though rotating power outages may occur because of the extreme heat felt statewide, Stage 3 rotating power outages are not associated with the public safety power shutoff (PSPS) program.
Californians are urged to take action by conserving electricity usage. More information is available at sce.com/rotatingoutage.
Shutdown our Natural Gas Powered Peaker Plants too . They were built just for this this type of event.
Vote them out in November! The powers that be know nothing about keeping the power on or the water flowing. They also know nothing about maintaining a healthy forest. California is turning into a third world state.
There is no clean source of energy, just trade-off over which one is less dirty. Since time began, there has been a search to harness some form of artificial energy production – from fire, water, human, animal, fossil fuels, steam, electricity, solar, wind, wave, and/or nuclear. Nuclear needs to be on the table; now more than ever. Just one more part of the ever evolving chain of resources to be exploited, like all the others.
I’m recalling an entirely different quote, ‘I felt exactly how you would feel if you were getting ready to launch and knew you were sitting on top of 2 million parts — all built by the lowest bidder on a government contract.’— Attributed to John Glenn
The technological future is in renewables, sustainability, and non-polluting power. Can nuclear waste be stored safely by the lowest bidder?
Great article from Forbes detailing the mismanagement of our electrical resources in California.

Mostly because our state and our cities placate to the fringe lunatics. So we end up with idiots, ignoramuses and crazies defining policy. Sadly, there are actually people who believe that electromagnetic radiation from power lines, transfer stations and various line upgrades is going to eat their brains (think smart meters or 5g). Even worse, our civic leaders pay mind to these fools and force us all to live in a Bizzaro world bending society’s best interests to meet those of a few… We really need to end this craziness. Our representative should listen ONLY to experts, not morons or deniers or ignoramuses. We need to send these fools back into their closets and let them wear their tin foil hats while they dress themselves in essential oils all by their lonesome selves…
LA Times article said the problem was caused by a large weather system leading to high temps across the Southwest. Normally a state that is not getting hit can send power to other regions. I find it amusing that the same conservatives that hate wasting tax and utility dollars to keep idle power plants sitting around in case they are needed every few years are criticizing this effort to keep our power system optimized and efficient. I guess they want to have their power cake and eat it too.
More like the abundant lunatics of CA state legislatures.
Oh. So they are not biased and censored like the mainstream media? That’s a good thing!
