Possible Oil Patches?

By an edhat reader

I live in the foothills of Carpinteria and can see the Channel Islands. I took these pictures Saturday which show what looks like large patches of oil floating between the mainland and the oil derricks.

They appear to be coming from the derricks and drifting toward Carpinteria. I couldn’t find an emergency number to report this to online. Any info?

  1. The channel has large, well studied natural oil seeps, so may be part of that (search engine lookup will give plenty of info). Also, it could be the millions of Velella velella individuals out there, as a group. Was out on the Sunday (April 2nd) saw Velellas all day. Or, as suggested, a “raft” of kelp. But good for you for being on the lookout, seriously.
