The City of Goleta is pleased to report that Phase One of the Old Town Sidewalk Improvement Project is complete. The first phase which broke ground on March 2, 2020 included completion of blocks of Orange and Magnolia Avenues north of Mandarin Avenue as well as Armitos Avenue. The sidewalks, curb, and gutter have been installed and residents are already using them in this current time of stay at home orders.
The final paving work and construction of the angled parking area is also complete for Magnolia Avenue. The pervious concrete is curing for a week and will be open for parking as soon as the concrete fully dries. This will add much desired and needed parking for Old Town. The final grinding and paving on Orange and Armitos Avenues will be done at the end of overall construction for seamless pavement.
City of Goleta Mayor Paula Perotte said, “We are all in need of good news these days and it is wonderful to report that the first of five phases for this long-awaited project is complete. Thank you to the project team that has been working so hard the past two months to reach this milestone and for the cooperation of the residents in Old Town Goleta. It has been a great team effort and a productive start to this project.”
The contractor has begun work on Phase 2 which will include improvements on S. Fairview Avenue, Aguila Avenue, and Mandarin Avenue between Orange and Magnolia Avenues. This phase is anticipated to take 4-6 weeks.
Thank you for your continued patience in dealing with the closed streets, construction noise, and disruptions while we make these important safety improvements. The City is thankful to have Filippin Engineering performing the construction management and inspection, and Toro Enterprises performing the construction work. The teams have revised their health and safety protocols to implement safer work practices during COVID-19. These new practices allow the City and teams to continue to bring our community the much-needed sidewalk safety improvements while keeping the community and the contractors safe during this pandemic.
Background
The 9031 Old Town Sidewalk Improvement project includes constructing sidewalk on at least one side of each street north of Hollister Avenue between South Fairview Avenue and Mallard Avenue as well as on Pine Avenue south of Hollister Avenue. The new sidewalks will connect to existing sidewalk providing a continuous path of travel. There will also be drainage improvements, tree replacements, repaving, and the construction of 39 back-in angled parking spots on Magnolia Avenue (for a net increase of approximately 17 new parking spots). Watch this video to learn more about the project.
When this project is done, the safety improvements, livability and ability to recreate in Old Town will change dramatically. We are pleased the community will be able to enjoy the improvements for years to come.
