A pedestrian was walking across SR-246 near Casino Drive when they were struck and killed by a vehicle around midnight on Friday.

Robert Miller, 69 of Solvang, was walking southbound across the eastbound lane of SR-246, just west of Casino Drive. This was around midnight where visibility was limited and he was wearing dark clothing, reports the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

In a white 2011 Ford F-250 was Robert Lamb driving westbound on SR-246 at approximately 40 mph, approaching Miller from the east.

Miller began to run southbound across the westbound lane, directly in front of the Ford truck. Lamb observed a pedestrian directly in front of his vehicle and applied his brakes but was unable to stop before the right front of his truck collided with Miller, CHP reports.

Miller was tranported to Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital by a ground ambulance but was pronounced dead within the hour.

CHP states alcohol was not a factor in this collision and it is currently under investigation; however, at this point it does not appear to be an intentional act by the pedestrian.

Chumash Casino provided surveillance footage and captured the incident.

Anyone with information regarding this collision is encouraged to contact Officer Reed at 805-688-5551.
