Pedestrian Killed in Castillo Off-Ramp Collision

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle on the Highway 101 Castillo Street offramp on Saturday evening.

On October 28, 2023, at approximately 10:15 p.m., emergency responders arrived on the southbound offramp for a reported collision.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports the crash occurred when a male pedestrian, for reasons unknown at this time, was standing in the middle of the off-ramp lane. A 2015 Honda Accord, driven by a 56-year-old Santa Barbara resident, was traveling southbound on the off-ramp when it collided with the pedestrian in the traffic lane.

The pedestrian sustained major injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital by a ground ambulance.

The pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the pedestrian is unknown at this time, reports CHP.

There were no injuries reported by the driver, or either of the two passengers in the Honda.

The off-ramp was temporarily closed for approximately two hours, in order to conduct this investigation.

This crash is still under investigation.  Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash, CHP states.
