The pedestrian who was struck and killed on Highway 101 near El Capitan earlier this month has been identified.
Kelly Chadic, 50 of Lompoc, was standing in the number two lane of Highway 101 northbound at 7:50 p.m. on November 6 south of El Capitan Ranch Road.
A 2007 Toyota RAV4, driven by 60-year-old Jerry D. Hartmann of Solvang, was traveling northbound in the number two-lane when the driver observed the pedestrian standing in the traffic lane.
Hartmann swerved to the left to avoid the pedestrian but was unsuccessful and the Toyota’s right front corner struck Chadic, knocking him to the ground. Chadic was lying within the number two lane when an unknown second vehicle struck him and caused him to be thrown to the right shoulder, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Chadic succumbed to his injuries at the scene. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision. The incident still under investigation.
Chadic was reportedly arrested previously that day for alleged public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. He was released from Santa Barbara County Jail around 3:00 a.m.
Anyone with information regarding this collision is requested to contact Officer V. Sanchez of the Santa Barbara CHP Office at (805) 967-1234 during normal business hours.
