One Injured in Downtown Santa Barbara Stabbing

Update by the Santa Barbara Police Department
12:25 a.m., July 30, 2022

On July 29, 2022, around 9:00 pm, the Santa Barbara Police Department Combined Communications Center received numerous 9-1-1 calls about a stabbing in the middle of the 1st West Block of Anapamu Street.

Multiple officers responded to the scene and located a single adult male stabbing victim near Anapamu Street and State Street. Based on witness statements, it seems some type of altercation occurred between the victim and the suspect(s) before the stabbing. The suspect(s) were last seen fleeing on foot fleeing towards Chapala Street prior to police arrival.

Community members rendered the victim aid until police and paramedics arrived on the scene. Once on scene, officers applied a tourniquet to the victim to stop bleeding from an appendage. The stabbing victim was transported to Cottage Hospital by paramedics for treatment and is believed to be in stable condition.

The suspect(s) are still outstanding, and the police department is actively investigating this case. Based on the initial investigation, this incident does not appear to be related to the previous shooting incident at Bohnett Park or the stabbing that occurred earlier in the week.

No other information is available currently.

    • GT: Mayor Rouse is in the process of reversing 30-plus years of poor leadership at City Hall. He openly admits that there’s work to be done, but by all indications he is up to the task. In case anyone is not aware of what he has been up to since taking office as far as community safety:
      – Assaults = down 15%
      – Thefts = down 20%
      – Burglaries = down 24%
      – Shoplifting = down 17%
      – Alameda Park / Shoreline Park / Pershing Park / De la Guerra Plaza & annex = 40% decrease in reported incidents (Bohnett Park….needs work and help is on the way)
      – Reported “homeless” / street crime along State Street = down nearly 30%
Anyone can look at the map on the Crime Spotter website for Santa Barbara. Far fewer incidents than in the past, so something that Randy is doing is obviously working.
Finally, we all elected a mayor who is concerned about everyone, not just a few special-interest groups. He has the respect of the police department and community leaders, which was not the case with at least the previous three mayors (Cathy, Helene, and Marty).

    • MarcElk: My bad…incorrect spelling of his name. No need to hate on him. Love him or not, he is quite possibly the most effective mayor of SB of the last 50-60 years. Hopefully for everyone’s sake he runs after his first term is over. Good chance I will be leaving this area in a couple of years (although I plan to VRBO my house). I wish him luck and my thoughts and prayers are with him in hopes he continues to reverse the downward trajectory.

    • BobScan: Quite often when you put a person who is capable and respected into a leadership position those around them put on their “A” game to support them. This happens in sports, business, and politics. So, in a way, Randy is directly affecting things around here to everyone’s benefit. I get it that those who did not vote for him will never agree with this, but whatta-ya-gonna-do.

  1. Can anyone remember when Woolworth’s was across State from the museum? With Pelch & Son and a fabric business positioned on the remaining corners of “State & A?” A person could go into Pelch’s and read “The Sporting News” to get stats on MLB players, buy a newspaper, magazine or sporting items for sale. Or, one could stop in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter for a quick lunch or a cherry coke. The State Theater was up the street and across from the Granada. This was all during a time when this stabbing would have been a rare and major incident in old downtown Santa Barbara. Who let the dogs out?
