The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) is reporting nine COVID-19 deaths within the county from Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday there were three deaths. Two individuals were 50-69 years of age and one was 70+. One individual had underlying health conditions and two of the deaths were associated with an outbreak at a congregate care facility. All three individuals lived in the City of Santa Barbara.
Six deaths were reported on Thursday. Five individuals were 70+ years of age and one was 50-69 years old. All six had underlying health conditions and four deaths were associated with an outbreak at a congregate care site. Four individuals lived in the City of Santa Barbara, one lived in Lompoc and one was from Orcutt.
The county has experienced 407 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
There are currently 422 active cases. Of those, 83 are hospitalized including 19 in the intensive care unit.

No underlying health conditions that they were aware of. Too many people go though much of their lives without regular physical exams and bloodwork. Things like diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol go undiagnosed for years and even decades for some people. One of the “no pre-existing” deaths was in a at a congregate care facility and you’d think that residents of such a facility would receive regular check-ups, but who knows.
What’s really terrible is that 6 of 9 deaths were still from congregate care facilities. For a year we’ve heard our public health officials and politicians talking about our most vulnerable, yet these helpless people are still dying at an alarming rate. It’s beyond ridiculous at this point.
