In an effort to address the ongoing housing crisis and provide support for the local unhoused population, the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara has unveiled the new Vera Cruz Village.
This development consists of 28 units located at 116 E. Cota Street, the former location of Vera Cruz Park, offers a place to call home for individuals and families in need.
Last week the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara (HACSB) held a grand opening announcing the completion of the Vera Cruz Village project. The mixed-unit complex features both one- and two-bedroom apartments and aims to make an impact on the local community’s housing situation.
This development was made possible through collaborative efforts between the Housing Authority, various organizations and government entities including 2nd Story Associates (HACSB’s affiliate nonprofit), Furnishing Hope program, and the Women’s Fund.
The homes are mostly furnished and are complete with regular on-site supportive services including case management and instructor-led educational and health and wellness classes available to residents free of charge, free in-unit internet service, a full-time on-site manager to oversee the apartment complex, a community room, controlled access points for entering and exiting the property, and no parking demand for residents aimed at reducing traffic impact in the area.

Vera Cruz Village has received praise for its commitment to addressing homelessness by not only offering housing but also providing support and resources for residents. By creating an environment that fosters stability and comfort, this development aims to assist individuals in rebuilding their lives.
While the unveiling of Vera Cruz Village marks a milestone in the effort to tackle the housing crisis, the Housing Authority and its partners acknowledge that more work needs to be done. They remain committed to finding innovative solutions and creating opportunities for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
I’m glad new approaches are being tried. The Republicans would just move, jail, harass, or put the homeless in other detrimental situations as they have no other solutions than anger and violence – they are unable to govern.
