On July 25, 2017 at 11:16 p.m., Sheriff’s Deputies and Santa Barbara County Fire personnel responded to the 5000 block of Highway 166 for a reported “Subject Down” on the side of the roadway.

When first responders arrived on scene, they discovered a deceased male, Travis John Studer, a 41 year old resident of New Cuyama, and the scene appeared suspicious. After further investigation, it was determined that the victim had likely been struck by a vehicle, after an apparent altercation that likely took place on the property.

Detectives from the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Bureau responded to the crime scene to assist with the investigation. The subsequent investigation revealed a possible suspect, who was located and interviewed.

After an interview with Sheriff’s Detectives, the suspect identified as Doug Allen Lewis, a 33 year old resident of New Cuyuma, was taken into custody. He was later transported and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for violation of 192 P.C., Vehicular Manslaughter, with bail set at $50,000.00.
