Best solution I’ve heard yet! I planted some Gooseberry, similar to wild rose it grows like crazy, doesn’t need watering and now I can’t get rid of it. But good deterrent against trespassers & vagrants.
Give them some fertilizer and mulch, water them into summer and you’ll get berries too.
Poison oak isn’t all that easy to grow. It likes (wait for it) Oak groves and Sycamores and prefers damp, shady areas. Typically there’s a nice creek nearby.
Here’s a solution: plant native Gooseberry at all known/potential campsites and nurture plants until they are established. Birds love the plants and the thorns will keep potential “campers” at bay.
Yeah, something has changed. We always had ‘hobos,’ but they generally were benign, didn’t cause problems for citizens. Now, we have ‘homeless’ actively harassing citizens, starting fires in their camps endangering everyone. We are now seeing about one homeless camp fire per week between Goleta and Montecito. Luckily most haven’t happened during the worst conditions, but it is just a matter of time. Meanwhile, authorities are playing ‘Whack-A-Mole’ trying to eradicate the camps. When one is cleaned up, the people just move a few hundred yards and start over. I wish I had the silver bullet solution, but I’m afraid no one does.
The silver bullet is political will which will take changing our elected leaders and terminating our current police chief. Other cities don’t have the problems we have. Nothing magic, just a change in direction and expectations. This city officially enables this conduct. Stop enabling and set strict community standards. Yes, that means jail for violations. Pass it on.
