Update by the edhat staff
Traffic is backed up on Highway 101 in both directions due to a multi-vehicle collision near the Gaviota Tunnel.
At 7:08 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the scene and discovered several collisions.
A male driver of a pickup truck sustained moderate injuries after it overturned in the northbound lanes, just south of the Highway 1 intersection, reports Captain Scott Safechuck.
Earlier around 6:45 a.m., California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Caltrans reports a dump truck has also overturned in the number two lane of Highway 101 southbound in Gaviota. CHP states there are several vehicles involved in this collision or in neighboring ones.
The number two lanes is closed causing significant traffic delays in the area.
There’s light rain falling in the area and Captain Safechuck reminds motorists to slow down and increase their following distance.

7 car accident SB 101 at Gaviota tunnel. I’m sure wet road had something to do with it. Happened around 6:40am. Vechicles all mangled in right lane and shoulder. One lane open.
They don’t really know how to drive in “wet” conditions and keep following each others by 20 feet at 70 MPH … And the CHP NEVER enforces the “three seconds rule” !
Thats is not entirely true. I went through there, must have been right before this accident, and the flow of traffic was slow and steady. There was a CHP with lights in in the NB lane, so everyone was on alert and going slow. My guess is that someone was rubber necking and trying to see what was happening in the NB lanes and then had to slam on their brakes.
It’s people driving on BALD TIRES…!! Wet roads happen all over the world. Wet roads aren’t the problem, it’s lack vehicle maintence and clueless or unlicenced drivers .
