Stearns Wharf celebrated its 150th anniversary a few months ago, but technically it is a pier, not a wharf. A wharf runs along the shore, and a pier is perpendicular and projects out into the water. (Both pier and perpendicular start with “p” – that’s how I remember it.)
But we did have a couple of piers in Santa Barbara way back when. There was one at Miramar Beach. This one was used in the 1915 “Flying A” silent movie “Wife Wanted.” You can see it in the background of this scene from the film.
Betsy’s Way Back When book — Movies & Million-Dollar Mansions — is now available in local bookstores and at Amazon.com. This is the seventh book in her series on the history of Santa Barbara. Learn more at .
