By Betsy J. Green
Dorothy Gish was born on March 11, 1898. She and her sister Lillian Gish were the superstar sisters of early silent films. In 1915, she starred in “Her Mother’s Daughter,” in which she portrayed a young woman who was disappointed in love, became a nun, then later lived to regret her decision. No happy ending here.
The movie was filmed at the Gillespie estate. This was the most popular million-dollar mansion for filming in Montecito. The mansion still exists, but the movie does not.
Betsy’s Way Back When book — Movies & Million-Dollar Mansions — is now available in local bookstores and at Amazon.com. This is the seventh book in her series on the history of Santa Barbara. Learn more at .
