Dateline: January 1918
The 19teens were the best years for movie serials involving dangerous stunts performed by both actors and actresses alike. “Vengeance – and the Woman” was a 15-part silent-movie serial filmed in part on Santa Cruz Island, just off the coast of Santa Barbara. The stars were William Duncan and Carol Holloway. (There were/are no hotels or restaurants on the island.)
“Spend Ten Days on Wild Island. William Duncan, star, and director of the Vitagraph serial “Vengeance – and the Woman,” celebrated the holidays by retaking scenes by day for two later episodes of the serial and cutting scenes by night. Notwithstanding the cold weather and the fact that the company lived in tents, many beautiful scenes were taken during a sojourn of ten days at Santa Cruz Island . . . While there, Carol Holloway and Mr. Duncan jumped from a fifty-foot cliff on a horse’s back into the sea.” – Motography, January 26, 1918
