The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) confirms 22 new cases of COVID-19 with a total of 416 during a press conference on Monday.
Of the 416 cases, 176 people have fully recovered, 168 people are recovering at home, 43 people are hospitalized with 15 of those in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and there have been 4 deaths. Overall there have been 51 healthcare workers in the grand total of 416 that contracted COVID-19.
Of the new 22 cases reported, 14 of them are people related to the outbreak at the Federal Prison in Lompoc. The ages of the new cases range from their 20s to over 70. Click here for more information on the ages and locations of each case.
PHD Officer Dr. Henning Ansorg stated that although there is not a large number of cases in our county, COVID-19 is circulating and physical distancing is the only way to slow its spread. “Please be patient and continue with these very important measures,” he said.
As communities throughout the nation are seeing an uptick in rallies to withdraw the stay at home order, Dr. Ansorg cautions anyone to take part in such gatherings. The virus is most contagious the day before patients become symptomatic and it affects older and young people alike, he said.
“It does not make any sense to undermine the efforts the community has successfully done. I think those people [who join rallies] would need some reeducation on the facts of the situation we’re in,” said Dr. Ansorg.
When asked why there’s an increase in younger patients contracting COVID-19, Dr. Ansorg stated he noticed the younger age group doesn’t abide by the socially distancing requirements as much as older people and it shows in the higher rate of infection. Young age does not protect us from catching this virus, he said.
Ventura and SLO Counties
As of Monday, San Luis Obispo County is reporting 132 confirmed cases. Of those, 111 have fully recovered, 18 are recovering at home, 2 people are hospitalized, and there has been 1 death.
San Luis Obispo County officials clarified activities that can safely operate under the County’s Executive Order to Shelter at Home and within the legal framework of the statewide Executive Order to Stay Home Except for Essential Needs. Officials identified business sectors that can operate under the County and State Orders. These include non-urgent surgery and outpatient practice, construction, dog grooming and recreational fishing. In each case, participants must follow the County’s appropriate physical distancing, face-covering and protective personal equipment (PPE) guidelines, which are in line with the CDC and CDPH guidelines.
Ventura County is reporting 428 confirmed cases. Of those, 222 have fully recovered, 193 are under quarantine at home, 26 are currently hospitalized with 8 in the ICU, and there have been 13 deaths.
Cottage Health Numbers
Below is a status update as of April 20, 2020.
- Cottage Health is caring for a total of 190 patients across all campuses.
- 139 are acute care patients; 234 acute care beds remain available.
- In surge planning, capacity is identified for adding 270 acute care beds.
- Of the 139 patients, 10 patients are on ventilators; 58 ventilators remain available (adult, pediatric and neonatal ventilators)
- Of the 139 patients, 18 are in isolation with COVID-19 symptoms; 13 are confirmed COVID-19 positive.
- Of 18 patients in isolation, 9 patients are in critical care.
- Cottage has collected 2,231 cumulative test samples: 175 resulted in positive, 2,023 resulted in negative, and 33 are pending. In most of these tests, patients did not require hospital admission.

I am sure people demographics has a lot to do with this. Why not show cases by zip code? CV prevention is more concerned about political correctness vs providing people use data. Also wondering if common flu cases/deaths have gone done due to social distancing? News/media is more concerned about pushing a political agenda. It will be interesting to se what happens in Georgia – they are like the guinea pig to assess ongoing risk. If one additional person dies from CV but 100,000 can go back to work due to opening up now – is that worth it?

The .01% deaths (Today = 130/MIL) in the US from Covid-19 do not justify the damage we are doing to the economy. For every 1 point the unemployment rate goes up, 36,000 DIE from heart attacks and deaths of despair. Wake up people.
Hope that can overcome fears is dashed for all by a global economic over-reaction that stops economic health and delivers for the things needed the important rituals that keep us serving others. We should be paying more attention to the higher recovery rates, not only deaths and focus on what those behaviors really are, were, and really work to raise the curve of surviving it! Feels too much like bullying now. You cannot go forward with a flattened local economic curve frozen in a time of fear. Adelante! This is founding day of our City at the Presidio–and Saint Junipero Serra was actually here pray for all, and to promote faith and resilience for all people.Those people even more vulnerable and diverse than now.
Risk = Cost (severity) x Probability (Odds). The mother of a New York City ER physician got an email from him with a description of what hospitalized cases of it are like. Horrifying, won’t repeat it here. When the ban is lifted, some will have to leave home, protected or not. Those for whom limited social interaction is excruciating will swarm out like hornets from a busted nest. They’ll swap tales, viruses, bacteria, relief, STDs and genes in a frenzy of relief. I have the luxury of continued caution and will accept only the risk from email, Zoom, Skype, and lonely walks until things settle. Better than writhing for a gasp of air while one’s lungs shut down.
Nothing like magical thinking at a time when it’s science that is necessary.
If the government agencies can hold their meetings, press conferences etc without wearing masks or other ppe and using social distancing, surely other businesses can do the same while using gloves and masks.
