Update by the Santa Barbara County Search & Rescue Team

Shortly before noon, Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue, Santa Barbara County and City Fire, SB County Air Support and AMR responded to a paraglider down with lower extremity injuries and stated 2 miles up from the trailhead.

With the distance from the trailhead, responding agencies responded to the Upper Rattlesnake trailhead to make access. Upon County Air Support Copter 308 arriving on scene, the paraglider was found between the first and second creek crossing just north of the pine tree grove.

A rescue technician was inserted at the location to evaluate the subject and determined that a hoist was best due to the injuries. The pilot was hoisted and flown to SB Cottage Hospital for further treatment of their injuries.

All ground teams were released from the incident once the patient had been successfully hoisted to the aircraft.

  1. Sounds like this:

An injured paraglider was rescued Saturday from the hills above Santa Barbara.
Just before noon, personnel from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department were dispatched to an incident involving a paraglider who was hurt in a hard landing off Gibraltar Road in Los Padres National Forest, according to emergency dispatch reports.
A county Air Support Unit helicopter also was dispatched to assist with the rescue.
The helicopter crew transported the injured paraglider to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of ankle injuries, according to emergency dispatch reports.

Just thinking about it makes my bones ache; hope they heal well.
