ANSWER

This beautiful piece of art is located on the sidewalk of Cabrillo Blvd across the Street from Ambassador Park. Due to its specific placement we did not accept answers that simply said “West Beach” or “Cabrillo Blvd.”

What is this art signifying? It’s called the Syuxtun Story Circle and was dedicated to the city in 2009. It’s a 20-foot mosaic story circle that includes 200,000 tiles, which were placed by more than 200 members of the Chumash community and their friends. “This mosaic is at the Chumash village site of Syuxtun, the principal village of ancient Santa Barbara. The stories here have been kept alive and vibrant by the memories of our ancestors and are dedicated to those to come,” a plaque reads.

Also known as Burton Mound, the area was reportedly one of the largest Chumash villages on the South Coast with at least 600 people living there around 1769. By 1800, there were about 120 people living there and by the 1830s, nearly the entire village had disappeared. Most of the Chumash had died from Spanish introduced diseases or become slaves to Mission Santa Barbara.
