Many of you correctly identified today’s photo. Perhaps it was the Instagram account faintly painted in the bottom right corner, or maybe it was the chopped off letters of the Far Western Tavern in the top left, or… maybe you just know your Santa Barbara County murals better than anyone else. The correct answer is the mural on the side of the Far Western Tavern building at 899 Guadalupe Street (or Highway 1) in Guadalupe.
Painted by Ruben Espinoza as part of the Squire Foundation Residency Program and commissioned by the Guadalupe – Nipomo Dunes Center, this “Big Heart Guad” mural reflects a small town with a lot of character. The building was built in 1912 as the Palace Hotel and was later bought by the Minetti Family in 1958 becoming the local favorite BBQ spot, “Far Western Tavern.” In 2012 the family moved to a bigger location in Orcutt, but the original hotel structure still stands. Some believe it’s haunted by the ghost of a man who died there during a fire in 1937, more can be read about that here.
