A vehicle that crashed over the side of Highway 1 at an unknown time was discovered Saturday morning with the driver in critical condition.
At 9:01 a.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a reported vehicle accident on Highway 1 south of the Constellation Road offramp near Vandenberg Village. A man who was collecting litter on the side of the roadway noticed a vehicle approximately 50 feet below.
The man climbed down to the vehicle and found the male driver had self-extricated but appeared to be very injured, said County Fire Public Information Officer Mike Eliason. Fire crews arrived on scene, assessed the driver and lifted him to the roadway where an ambulance transported him to the Lompoc Airport. Calstar 7 helicopter was waiting and flew the driver to Santa Barbara Cottage with critical injuries.
It’s unknown what time the vehicle left the roadway and how long the man had been injured, but he wasn’t discovered until 9:00 a.m. Saturday.
California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
Whoa, that’s gnarly. Looks like that car has been in that position for quite a while.
