A man has died after falling from a tree in the Mission Canyon neighborhood early New Year’s Day.
Around 1:30 a.m. emergency personnel arrived in the area of 2626 Puesta del Sol near the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for a reported medical emergency.
The Santa Barbara County Fire Department states a male climbed a tree and attempted to jump onto a nearby power pole when he fell to the ground.
The man, who has yet to be identified, sustained a major head injury and was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for injuries. He was pronounced dead hours later.
Neighbors on social media stated there was a New Year’s Eve party taking place in the area, but not in the homes near the tree, and they heard a lot of screaming.
According to one poster, emergency personnel was called while the male was in the tree but he fell minutes before their arrival.
It’s unclear if the male was under the influence at the time of the incident.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
