Lompoc Victim Identified in Fatal Officer Involved Shooting

The Officers involved in the October 9th, 2021, Officer-Involved Shooting were Officer Mauricio Calderon, Officer Gabriel Molina, and Officer Rudy Mendoza. Officer Calderon is a twelve-year member of the Lompoc Police Department with twenty-five years overall in Law Enforcement. Officer Gabriel Molina is a three-year member of the Lompoc Police Department, and Officer Rudy Mendoza has had approximately two years of service with the Lompoc Police Department. 

These officers remain on administrative leave. The investigation is ongoing.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the name of the decedent from the Lompoc Police Department officer involved shooting on October 9, 2021. The decedent is 32-year-old Travis Daniel Carlon of Lompoc.

The investigation remains ongoing, and this is the only additional information that has become available for release. The Lompoc Police Department will be handling the criminal investigation associated with the original call for service as well as the administrative investigation into the officer involved shooting.

Crime/Offense : 245(a)(2)pc- Assault with a deadly weapon

On October 9, 2021, at 6:33 PM. Lompoc Police Officers responded to a reported assault with a deadly weapon. This incident escalated into a barricaded suspect with a subject refusing to respond to officers outside of the residence. The suspect eventually came to the door with a handgun and pointed the weapon at the officers, resulting in an Officer Involved Shooting. The suspect was fatally wounded.

At the request of Lompoc Police Chief Joseph Mariani, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office responded to conduct an Officer Involved Shooting Investigation. All requests for additional information should be directed to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Lompoc Police Department with an investigation into an officer involved shooting. On October 9, 2021, at 6:33 p.m., Lompoc Police officers responded to a reported assault with a deadly weapon. As the incident unfolded, the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence and refused to respond to officers. The suspect eventually came to the door with a handgun and pointed the weapon at the officers, resulting in an officer involved shooting. The three officers who were involved are not injured and the suspect was fatally wounded.

The Lompoc Police Department will be handling the criminal investigation associated with the original call for service as well as the administrative investigation into the officer involved shooting. The identity of the involved officers as well as the identity of the suspect are not yet available for release.
