Update by the Lobero Theatre Foundation
The large flag currently on display on the exterior of the Lobero Theatre for National Flag Week was vandalized overnight on June 14. The Lobero Theatre Foundation has filed a police report and is working with the Santa Barbara Police Department.
“The flag was hung in the spirit of unity for our community to enjoy, and in honor of National Flag Week. We’re very disappointed that this happened.” – David Asbell, Lobero Theatre Executive Director
The flag will be taken down and cleaned or repaired as needed in anticipation of next year’s Flag Day and National Flag Week celebrations. No other damage to the Lobero Theatre was found.

The Lobero Theater’s large American Flag was vandalized last night.

What happened to the flag on the Lobero?
-
It appears on Thursday evening or early Friday morning, someone threw or shot blue paint at the downtown flag on the Lobero.
Maybe there should be an armed guard on duty to watch it 24/7…
Actually it is. It’s called freedom of speech and comes with the amendment that precedes the one so many think is ordained by god himself.
Um, no, no it’s not. Also, to those that deface the flag, if that’s not your flag, then this is not your country, and you may help yourself back to the craphole you came/descended from.
What happened to the comment from the ‘decorated veteran’ that served for the freedom of expression? Or was he/she outed as a fraud? It was the second comment posted…..
There’s nothing “wrong” with people.
As a decorated veteran, I relieved someone else of their right to freedom, so that all Americans could exercise theirs.
I hope this was just some dumb kids…. otherwise, I weep for the nation.
Absurd. This isn’t their property to deface. It’s anti-patriotic vandalism, but the only part that’s a crime is the vandalism part. The rest is just pathetic.
I noticed the size of this flag when I parked in the lot behind the Lobero. I am ok with flags and those that want to wave them, but it seems that lately, flags have gotten bigger and bigger. I am wondering if the city sign ordinance allows for such a massive flag in this location. Isn’t the Lobero an ‘historic’ building? The flag, in any size, represents different things to different people. At our house, we fly a small American flag on Memorial and Veterans Days. If they replace this huge flag, maybe they will consider one of a more reasonable size.
Or, leave it, and go to what you may consider a ‘better’ country.
Nothing wrong with the size of any American flag for me!
I would have never done damage to this flag but I have to admit it is offensive to me in its braggadocio. Really, why do “patriots” have to be so excessive? Loud military planes in overflight of events. Rifles being shot off? In your face aggressive statements of “my country right or wrong” are irritatingly simplistic and actually fly in the face of what the Founding Fathers created–diversity, tolerance, debate and civility being paramount to the idea of a free and democratic republic.
I continue to wonder why people that find the flag of our country so offensive why they don’t move to a country they find less offensive.
I lost complete faith in all that b.s. at the age of 21, when I and a majority of the state of CA voted yes on 187…
Actually, it’s a felony.
maybe this is one more crime that we want to decriminalize…..why not have the power to destroy and deface everything and anything that one personally construes to be a symbol of oppression or merely something one disagrees with. what the heck, let’s have total anarchy except for the branch of government that takes care of entitlement payments……
If you hate this country, vote. Don’t vandalize.
Don’t use the military as a dumping ground.
I hope they / somebody has some video camera footage, and we can catch these low-life common bottom feeder scum useless idiots.
So you think that Prop 187 was wrong? It simply said that illegal immigrants were ineligible for free stuff from the taxpayers. Back then it was estimated to be costing CA taxpayers $200 million a year. Now it costs CA taxpayers $23 Billion.
