Local law enforcement agencies are calling on football fans to prioritize responsible driving during Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, February 11, 2024.
With the aim of keeping drunk drivers off the road, law enforcement emphasize the role every resident plays in ensuring a safe and enjoyable Super Bowl experience.
The Santa Barbara Police Department reminds football fans not to drive impaired if they’re heading out to a Super Bowl party and plan on drinking and instead advises to use the “Go Safely” game plan and choose a sober way to go.
Agencies plan to increase traffic enforcement this weekend to be on the lookout for impaired drivers.
“Let’s make sure Super Bowl Sunday is remembered for great plays on the field, not for unnecessary risks on the road,” SBPD Sergeant Douglas Klug said. “Before you grab a drink, plan ahead for a sober designated driver. Choosing a safer way to go is a win-win for everyone.”
The staggering statistics of drunk driving incidents serve as a reminder of the urgency in addressing this issue. In 2021 alone, over 13,000 people were killed in drunk driving crashes, equivalent to one person losing their life every 39 minutes. Fatalities resulting from alcohol-impaired driving crashes have seen an alarming increase of 14.2% to 31% in recent years.
While alcohol is a known cause of impaired driving, local departments emphasize that impairment can also result from the use of prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs. The department underlines that although medicinal and recreational marijuana may be legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is not permitted. It is essential to understand that marijuana can have impairing effects, particularly when combined with alcohol or other substances, potentially leading to a DUI.
To ensure a safe Super Bowl experience, follow the below game plan:
- Commit to a sober evening if you plan to be a designated driver. Be the responsible friend who ensures everyone gets home safely.
- Only serve alcohol to individuals who are 21 years old or older, adhering to legal drinking age limits.
- Download rideshare apps onto your phone ahead of time, ensuring convenient transportation options are readily available.
- Always wear your seatbelt when in any moving vehicle, promoting safety and reducing the risk of injuries.
- If you encounter a drunk driver on the road, immediately call 9-1-1 to report the incident and potentially prevent a tragic outcome.
