Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, emergency officials responded to Butterfly Beach for a report of a man in the water.
The Montecito Fire Department joined by Harbor Patrol, Carpinteria Fire Department, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s, were able to find the man in distress and remove him from the water.
It’s unclear why the man was in the water and what injuries he suffered.
Edhat will update this article with more information as it becomes available.

There are lots of emergency personnel shining bright lights at the ocean at Butterfly Beach.
SNAPS – what are you saying? That, depending on “who it was,” they shouldn’t have been rescued?
my comment was of random pedestrian types trying to perform a rescue. For them to go out and try to rescue someone and not knowing their condition or mental state – puts them at great risk. So best to involve professionals.
And also I have witnessed people out on those bluffs who live out there doing drugs. So who knows what condition someone would be in out in the water.
Yeah. Those “random pedestrian types” best keep out of it. Stand by and watch someone drown, that’s my motto, too.
Someone saw this dude in the water and called it in? If he was so “in distress” why is it people waited for authorities to show up and didn’t try to rescue him straight away? Did anyone try to talk him out of the water? Was he drunk/drugged up and thought it was a good idea to go for a swim? Many questions.
“stand by and watch someone drown” is pretty crass, realistically if you don’t have training in saving a drowning person in ocean conditions, you very likely WILL drown too. Animal instincts kick in when a person is about to die by drowning, and they will pull anything or anyone down with them without thinking about it. I’ve heard multiple accounts of people who were actually embarrassed that they did this to someone else while being saved from drowning, but also acknowledge there was no conscious thought happening in that moment.
