On August 27, 2020 at approximately 9:40 A.M., the Santa Barbara Police Department received multiple 911 calls reporting a male subject seen chasing another man with a knife near the City of Santa Barbara’s harbor boat launch.
Several nearby officers arrived on scene within about a minute.
Officers observed the male subject actively chasing the victim around the Sea Landing area with what appeared to be a knife in the suspect’s hand.
As Officers attempted to intercept the suspect, he fled on foot towards Cabrillo Blvd. The suspect, later identified as Fernando Palomar, a 29-year-old transient, was apprehended after a short foot pursuit.
According to witness statements, Palomar allegedly attempted to steal a case of beer from the truck bed of the victim’s vehicle.
The victim confronted Palomar about the theft. Palomar brandished an edged weapon and advanced toward the victim. Palomar abandoned the stolen beer and persistently chased the victim on foot around the park lot, wielding a knife. The victim was able to narrowly avoid the suspect’s slashing motions on multiple advances.
Palomar became aware of the arrival of Officers and ran from the scene. He discarded the weapon during the foot chase with Officers. After an extensive search, the knife was not located.
Palomar was later booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges stemming from the melee. Those charges include for 664/187 PC – Attempted Murder and 148(a)(1) – Resisting Arrest.
Yikes. Keep your beer in the cab and not the bed of your truck. Lesson learned I guess?
Stealing wine from picnickers at the Rose Garden. Stealing beer at the harbor. Narcan for a drug overdose at Alameda Park. Vagrants staring you down at sidewalk tables on State Street. And that was just the past few days. Does any part of our town feel safe anymore? Seven city council persons are all the sudden very quiet about any of this. They are now more interested creating “affordable housing” for themselves and their campaign supporters. Time to clean house. District elections have failed us.
So he’s just your average “local” guy who has become homeless and needs more of our help (=taxpayer money)? We’ve been hearing this type of bs repsonse to a lot of our complaints about the homeless-friendly town were living in. That is, that almost all the homeless are locals that can’t make it for one reason or another. Let’s give him free housing, food, maybe some cool clothes. And all the beer he can drink.
So how long before he is release with zero bail?
Why would this warrant a no-bail release?
No consequences, open invitation to these types of “visitors”
No enforcement of the types of activities that draw this behavior in.
This is the new norm for SB & CA.
And they want me to pay my taxes? What services and rights do I get for paying taxes & owning my home?
Transients, non tax payers, non property owners have more rights than hard working Americans.
Shoot, think I’ll move into my RV & do whatever I want just like they do.
In fact I think I’ll just take a whiz on the sidewalk right now & throw my coffee cup and wrapped i
on the ground.
Why not, the govt doesn’t care and isn’t doing anything g about it.
