Just shy of her 21st birthday, Kayla Day returned to her hometown to dominate the $25,000 Santa Barbara Women’s Invitational Tournament at the Santa Barbara Tennis Club on Foothill Road.
Kayla Day, a professional tennis player since the age of 17, joined 7 other women in a round-robin format on the singles side and advanced to the finals Friday to play UCSB player Camille Kiss. Day, the former US #1 junior player has been on a comeback after injuries and the COVID-19 interruption.
Looking in top form in the singles final, Kayla prevailed 6-1, 6-2 to take home the championship. Relying on her experience gained from her years on the tour, Kayla showed a combination of power and finesse to handle the solid groundstrokes of Kiss. An hour later, Kayla added the doubles crown teaming with partner Sophie Whittle of Nipomo.
The future looks bright for young Kayla as she continues to advance her career. Up next is a $100,000 tournament in Macon, Georgia. Happy birthday Kayla, Santa Barbara is behind you.
