A kayaker in distress was rescued off the Gaviota Pier by a local fishing boat on Thursday evening.
At 9:35 p.m., Santa Barbara County fire crews and a water rescue team out of Goleta responded to the Gaviota Coast, said Fire Captain Dave Zaniboni.
It was determined a single male kayaker was approximately a half mile off the coast and was in distress without a paddle. Units on scene were gearing up to launch jet skis to make contact with the kayaker when a good samaritan passing in a personal fishing boat arrived on scene. A crew on the boat was able to load the kayaker and safely return the man to Gaviota State Beach uninjured, said Zaniboni.
Crews were released from the scene and the man was uninjured.
