On 3/30/18, at around 5 pm SMPD dispatch received a 911 call from a victim who reported that two males attempted to carjack her vehicle in the area of Alvin St. and Lincoln St. The suspects were described as Hispanic juveniles, one armed with a knife and the other possibly armed with a handgun. The suspects were unsuccessful in the carjacking attempt and ran from the area.
A few minutes later, at around 5:07 PM SMPD dispatch received multiple calls from individuals in the area of the 200 block of E. El Camino, the callers reported that two males were attempting to rob and/or carjack victims in the immediate vicinity.
As officers arrived on scene, they contacted one suspect, a 15-year-old juvenile, walking in the area of Broadway and Fesler St. The suspect ran from the officers and was apprehended a short distance away, at the intersection of Broadway and Mill St.
During the course of this investigation it was learned that just prior to his arrest, the suspect carjacked a Nissan SUV in the area of McClelland and Tunnel St. The owner of the vehicle was ordered to remain in the vehicle against his will. As the suspect drove from the area, he was involved in a traffic collision with a Chevrolet Silverado truck at the intersection of Broadway and Tunnel St. After the collision, the suspect ran from the Nissan SUV and that is when officers saw him and subsequently took him into custody.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado truck was uninjured. However, the owner of the Nissan SUV received minor injuries as a result of the traffic collision and he was taken to Marian Medical Center by ambulance. The suspect also received minor injuries and was transported to Marian Medical Center by ambulance.
The suspect was taken to Juvenile Hall and booked under numerous felony charges. Due to the suspect being a juvenile his name and is not being released.
