A California Highway Patrol (CHP) motorcycle officer was airlifted to the hospital on Thursday afternoon after a collision on Highway 101 near Buellton.
Santa Barbara County Firefighters arrived around 2:15 p.m. to the scene in the southbound lanes, approximately a half mile south of the Nojoqui Summit.
The male officer sustained moderate injuries in the collision and was transported by a ground ambulance to the nearby Highway 1 southbound offramp.
Captain Scott Safechuck stated the officer was transferred to a CalStar medical helicopter and flown to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment due to weather preventing air travel to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
The officers name and details on his condition and the collision were not immediately available.
Traffic in the area was closed down for a time following the collision.
This is a developing story.
Don’t want to “speculate” about this particular accident, but I can tell you from personal experience riding a motorcycle through that intersection numerous times, there is very loose gravel and a degradation of the asphalt coming out of Old Coast and more so in the center divider when merging across the intersection to go Southbound… Although this Motorcop was on a Harley (ugh), who knows what happened to him… Hope he recovers quickly.
