A MarBorg trash truck caught on fire in Goleta on Monday and the City is confirming the cause is improper battery disposal.
The recycling truck was driving through Old Town Goleta around 11:00 a.m. when the driver noticed smoke coming from the back of the truck.
The driver pulled over at the Goleta Valley Community Center on Hollister Ave and dumped the load to find smoldering batteries.
“Great reminder from MarBorg about the importance of disposing of your batteries the correct way,” wrote the City of Goleta. “The culprit? Batteries. Learn proper disposal at https://lessismore.org/materials/5-batteries-explained.”
Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire. There were no injuries.

Vehicle Fire Response to Old Town Goleta

SB County Fire on the scene of a reported vehicle fire at 11:08a (Monday).
This is at 5679 Hollister Ave in Old Town Goleta, the Goleta Valley Community Center. Hearing it’s a trash fire inside a Marborg truck.
On the scene are ME12, ME13 with B11 enroute. ME14 and T11 are cleared from the area. All seems to be well, mopping up.
For common household batteries, just put them in a bag and put them on top of the recycle bin lid.

Place common household batteries (9v or less) in a clear zip top bag ON TOP of your recycling cart or in your apartment’s orange battery bucket. Or, drop them off at MarBorg’s Downtown or Goleta Recycling Centers, or UCSB’s Hazardous Waste Center.

Other batteries (greater than 9v) are extremely dangerous for waste haulers, and they must be dropped off at MarBorg’s Downtown or Goleta Recycling Centers, or UCSB’s Hazardous Waste Center.

What kind of batteries are those?
I’m hoping this doesn’t come off as just my disdain for e-bikes; but that sure looks a lot like an inexpensive e-bike battery (same shape & configuration)…

Could be an inexpensive battery for pretty much anything — you see cylindrical cells like that in most packs where space isn’t a big concern. (Packs that need to fit into a confined space use pouch cells instead.)
