Traffic control for Stage 2 of the Hollister Class I Bike Path will begin on Tuesday, June 27 and will remain in place until approximately October 2017. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph. Work will not take place July 3 & 4 due to the holiday.
Stage 2 work includes:
- Demolition of the existing sidewalk
- Construction of new 14 foot wide Class I / multipurpose path and landscape buffer
- Construction of new curb extensions at minor street crossings
- Installation of landscaping and irrigation at the back of the new path and in the landscape buffer
- Installation of landscaping and irrigation where applicable in the new median islands
- Modifications to the traffic signals at Entrance Road and Pacific Oaks Road
During Stage 2 in the eastbound direction on Hollister Avenue (south side), the following will be closed: one traffic lane, existing sidewalk and bike lane on the south side of the road. As part of the Stage 2 traffic control, a temporary concrete barrier (known as a K-rail) will be placed adjacent to the open traffic lane. A multipurpose pedestrian and bicycle pathway will be provided behind the K-rail to separate the pathway from the traffic. Delineators and temporary plastic fencing will separate the pedestrians and bicycles from the construction work area. Openings will be made in the K-rail at driveway locations.
Pedestrians & Bicyclists
Pedestrians will need to be aware of their surroundings during Stage 2 as temporary pathways will only be available in designated areas. Pedestrians traveling from neighborhoods to the south of Hollister Avenue at Lowell Way, Cannon Green Drive, Entrance Road, Coronado Drive and Palo Alto Drive, will be directed to cross to the west side of the street prior to reaching Hollister Avenue. A temporary pathway will only be provided on the west side of these streets at the approach to Hollister Avenue.
Pedestrians traveling from neighborhoods to the south of Hollister Avenue at Santa Barbara Shores and Pebble Beach Drive will be directed to cross to the east side of the street prior to reaching Hollister Avenue. A temporary pathway will only be provided on the east side of these two streets at the approach to Hollister Avenue.
Bicyclists are encouraged to use the temporary multipurpose 12 foot pathway created for bicyclists and pedestrians. There will be no Class II Bike lane available in the eastbound direction during the Stage 2 construction. Any bicyclists choosing to ride on Hollister Avenue outside of the pathway will share the single 11 foot lane with vehicles.
Bicyclists and pedestrians using the temporary multipurpose pathway will need to watch out for individuals waiting for buses at the two temporary bus stop locations, as well as vehicles turning into or out of driveways.
During Stage 2 construction in the westbound direction on Hollister Avenue (north side), the current traffic control configuration on Hollister Avenue installed during Stage 1 will remain for Stage 2. Hollister Avenue will continue to be reduced to a single westbound lane, as one lane remains closed to accommodate work in the new medians during Stage 2. The existing Class II bike lane and sidewalk will remain open.
Bus Stops
Due to the construction work and closure of one of the two eastbound lanes, the MTD bus stops will be impacted. There are currently a total of four bus stops located along the construction area. These will temporarily be reduced to two bus stops (meaning two stops will be closed) no sooner than Wednesday, June 28. The two bus stops that will be provided during the Stage 2 construction will be temporarily relocated to central locations within the construction zone. One bus stop will be located between Palo Alto Drive and Coronado Drive, and one bus stop will be located between Entrance Road and Cannon Green Drive. Traffic Signals
The existing traffic signals at Pacific Oaks and Entrance Road will remain under timing control throughout Stage 2. Timing control is necessary because the lanes and turn lanes are shifted and new detection will not be installed until the signal modification work taking place during Stage 2 is complete. Expect the same timing that is being experienced now during Stage 1.
