*** Trail Rescue – San Ysidro Trail (7/25/21) ***

At around 12pm [Sunday] afternoon, SBCSAR, Montecito Fire and AMR responded for a 71-year-old female hiker in distress on San Ysidro Trail about a half mile down from the top of East Camino Cielo. The hiker had reportedly become distressed in the heat and was unable to continue hiking.

Montecito Fire sent teams from the trailhead and SAR inserted teams from the top to hike down. After hiking down about 20 minutes, the first SAR team made contact with the hiker and started a medical assessment that included providing water, electrolytes and shade on the highly exposed trail above the falls and creek. A couple minutes later the first Montecito Fire team made it to the subject location and determined that IV fluids would aid the hiker and allow for a slow hike down to the trailhead for transport to her vehicle. The hiker was walked down the trail and transported to her vehicle. All teams were out of the field and returned to service just before 4pm.

  1. It’s great that we have that SBCSAR helping folks out. However, this incident could have been fully avoided. This is not a good time of year for anyone to go hiking, much less and older person. I understand the need to get our and exercise. But do it wisely.

  2. LCP, not a good time of the year to go hiking? i’ve lived here for 51 years. this is a perfectly fine time to go hiking. hydration and know your limits. but to say it’s not the right time of the year is just weird…i have hiked both days this past weekend, 630am to noon and by noon, i’m in the waves.
