High Wind Warning in Effect Through Sunday Evening

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory and High Wind Warning for parts of Santa Barbara County starting Saturday through the evening of Sunday, January 7.

Areas of the Santa Barbara County Southwestern Coast, Santa Ynez Mountain Range and interior mountains are expected to be affected.

The High Wind Warning is expected to bring northwest winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.

Damaging winds could blow down large objects such as trees and outdoor furniture. Unplanned power outages are possible. Take caution when outdoors and when driving. Avoid hazardous activities that may cause sparks or start a wildfire, the NWS states.

A High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 9:00 a.m. Monday for San Luis Obispo County Beaches and Santa Barbara County Central Coast Beaches, largest on northwest facing shores.

Large breaking waves up to 12 to 16 feet with dangerous are expected. rip currents.

“There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore. STAY OFF THE ROCKS,” the NWS states.

Enhanced beach erosion is also possible with minor beach flooding, especially during each morning high tide between 4 and 6am.
