Help Design State Street!

By the City of Santa Barbara

On December 9th and 10th, the City will host workshops at 821 State Street for members of the community to help create design concepts for the project area.

Attendees will be grouped into small teams to design a typical block on State Street using a map of the street and game pieces that reflect potential transportation options and activities that could be included in the long-term design for State Street. Each team’s design poster will be hung at the location and available for viewing on December 9th and 10th at 821 State Street. Each workshop will also include a brief project update and time to view other teams’ designs.

All events will include the same activities and be in English and Spanish. No professional design experience is required to participate in any of these events, and all community members are welcome. Childcare will be provided, and a pop-up art show focused on creativity and innovation, in collaboration with The Arts Fund, will take place during the design events.

Also, if you have not already taken the survey, please do so before attending a community design workshop. We hope to see you on December 9 or 10th!

  1. I would recommend going back in time 40+ years, those were the days. If that can’t be done, I would suggest picking the most vacant and desolate 2-3 blocks of state street, having the city buy all the property, demolishing everything, and making it into a park/ open space. If the property is too expensive, I would recommend implementing highly restrictive and unduly burdensome architectural review requirements until the property values drop sufficiently to make the open space plan feasible.
