By the edhat staff

Pool chemicals created a hazardous gas injuring one person at a Santa Ynez hotel.

At 4:20 p.m. Friday, Santa Barbara County Firefighters and a HazMat crew responded to the Vinland Hotel in the 1400 block of Mission Drive for a reported hazardous materials call.

Upon arrival the HazMat team discovered two pool chemicals, phosphoric acid & chlorine, created a toxic gas with about two gallons of product.

The HazMat personnel made entry to the area wearing Level-A encapsulated suits. The chemicals were diluted and neutralized in the hotel’s pool.

One adult female was transported to the Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital emergency room by ground ambulance. The extent of injuries and current condition are unknown, but the woman is employed by the hotel.

Captain Scott Safechuck reports the incident is now stable and no remaining hazardous material readings have been reported.

The hotel pool closed with the PH levels being monitored for reopening.

The incident is under investigation.
