Happy Halloween edhatters! It’s the spookiest time of the year where tricks and treats run rampant, but so do outlandish costumes and hilarious decorations.
Send in photos of your Halloween costumes, local decorations, or anything festive to get us all in the Halloween Spirit. Don’t forget to read the spooky stories that won top honors in our annual Halloween Story writing contest here.
A reader shared this photo of a house on the Westside that has headstones reading “The Will to Go On,” “Pants with buttons and zippers, long live leggings,” “Trader Joes Orchid, we tried,” “Free Food Samples, I miss you,” “Taylor Swift Concert with my BFF,” and “Bennifer 1.0 (2001-2004), Bennifer 2.0 has risen (2021-?).” Hilarious, love this every year.
Robert F. shared the above photo: “This just in, after many encounters with the skunks Mr. Petey Dog is in camouflage not just for Halloween but for close encounters of the stinky kind Happy Howloween! Woof.”
The below photos were shared by Kane who said, “We weren’t answering the door due to the lockdown last year, but were still in the spirit (ha, get it? spirit!). The zombie lawn flamingos demonstrate 6-foot distancing with the visual aid of 6 chicken feet hanging from stakes in the ground. We also put a tray full of candy out in front for the local goblins. Despite a sign to share and not be greedy, the tray was emptied before 8:00 pm. Boo!”

In honor of Gemina (crooked neck giraffe) and Little Mac (the elephant, though tusks were artistically included here), I present my Santa Barbara zoo themed pumpkins, see (below). Happy Halloween!

Halloween 2021 Statistics
Sticking with our edhat tradition, we’re providing fun facts and figures about America’s candy-driven holiday. Did you know that ringing doorbells and lighting candles are thought to ward away witches, ghosts and evil spirits? And about 80% of “haunted houses” are operated by charities?
This year Wallet Hub predicts that 20% of people plan to put costumes on pets, and 79% of parents admit to stealing candy from their kids. It’s projected that $10.1 Billion will be spent on Halloween this year with $3.3 Billion: on Halloween costumes and another $3 Billion on candy. That’s a lot of cavities. See more below:
