The Granada Theatre in downtown Santa Barbara had to cancel and reschedule several shows after a sprinkler malfunction on January 25 resulted in significant water damage.
Although there was no actual fire, the stage was flooded due to a mechanical error which triggered multiple sprinklers. The water caused significant damage to the stage and overflowed into the basement.
The estimated completion date for repairs is the end of February, leaving the theater with no choice but to relocate or cancel upcoming performances.
One of the affected shows was the highly anticipated performance by Les Ballets Trockadero, scheduled for January 25. The all-male ballet company, set to be brought by UCSB Arts & Lectures, is now working diligently to find an alternative venue to host their show. Additionally, José Límon Dance has been moved to Campbell Hall, while Renée Fleming’s performance has been relocated to the nearby Arlington Theatre. Even the live taping of NPR’s Mountain Show with Kathy Mattea, originally planned for February 4, has been moved to the Arlington.
The Granada Theatre is actively collaborating with resident companies and external presenters to reschedule shows or find alternate venues. The theater’s website, granadasb.org, is being updated to reflect the ongoing changes in the February schedule, ensuring audiences stay informed.
This April, the Granada Theatre will mark its 100th anniversary as a historic and cherished movie palace turned live theater. The venue underwent a comprehensive renovation between 2003 and 2008. It now includes a live theater on the ground floor with condominiums and penthouses above.
While this water damage setback is unfortunate, the theatre remains committed to providing performances. As the old adage goes, the show must go on.
