Goleta Pier Shooters 1965

By Tom Modugno of Goleta History

We got a call the other day from Keith Zandona, legendary local Goleta surfer and activist. He said he had some video he thought I might like. He was right.

Two disks full of vintage, early to mid 1960s Super 8 footage. They were made by his older brother Doug back in the Golden Years of Goleta Surfing. We watched them all the way through together as he gave me a running narration of classic memories from the beaches of Goleta.

So, I forced myself to be somewhat of a video editor so I could break these up into bite size clips for mass consumption. Of course, I contacted the “Artiste” directly, and Doug filled me in on more details.

So here is the first installment of what teenaged Doug named ” A Packageful of Waves”, a short section I titled, “Goleta Pier Shooters 1965”. Enjoy!

One more thing- If you don’t follow my Goleta History site, I’ve started a petition. Check it out if interested. Thanks.

  1. This is SO GREAT! Thanks to all for showing it to us.
Everyone was a beginner once — we all had to learn to walk and everything else.
I have to find and scan some pic of me & my mom at Hendry’s in the 60’s; shows the cars in the background. And there’s a pic of us by the shipwreck where the dog beach is now.

  2. I learned to surf in the summer if 67 so I missed this by a couple years.
Yes, the campus was there at the time but the point was called College point because it was an Army-Air corps base if I remember correctly.
So it’s Collage point to me and my friends and now Campus point to new comers.
Hell my mom went to “UCSB” or what ever it was called back then up in the Riviera, and it was an all girls school specializing in teaching.
Boy, that sure has changed from education to indoctrination.
