Glorious Wildflowers on a Carrizo Plain Loop Trip

By Two Abbys

The wildflowers were fantastic on our drive [last week] to the Carrizo Plain and back. We drove up 101 to Santa Margarita, then turned east on CA 58. There are spectacular displays on Shell Creek Road at and north of its intersection with 58. On the floor of the Carrizo Plain there are purple carpets of Phacelia so extensive that their scent fills the air.

Turn south on Soda Lake Road to traverse the National Monument. Soda Lake is full to the brim and gorgeous, and the short climb to the view point for the lake is not to be missed. Continuing south on the unpaved Soda Lake Road rewarded us with our favorite wildflower displays, not far from the road’s intersection with CA 166.
