The Gaviota rest stops off Highway 101 are scheduled to reopen Thursday following an 18-month closure.
Caltrans made the announcement on social media stated the rest areas in both directions of the highway will reopen by 5:00 p.m. following a wastewater system improvement project.
The northbound and southbound stops closed in June of 2021 and was scheduled to reopen this past February. They underwent a $4.6 million project to improve wastewater treatment and electrical systems as well as build two new structures, a water storage tank/pump house and a crew building.
Several months ago, an edhat reader reported they had submitted a request to Caltrans on March 3, 2022 asking why the Gaviota rest stops had still not been reopened. They received an email stating the rest stop would be open April 2022.
“It is now almost Sept 2022 and the rest stops are still closed. Several times a week I drive by and there is no activity. The same backhoe has been parked there for years. I received a call from Caltrans, she was apologetic and said there is an issue with the toilets flushing and the engineer is looking into it. I asked if there is a finish date, there is none right now,” the reader reported.
Now it’s scheduled to be open within 24 hours, just in time for holiday traffic.

Government is not a business. They can take as long as they want, spend more money than budgeted, and can keep shutting down indefinitely.
Its a great gig! Why would anyone rush to get these done?
I 15 to Vegas is pathetic too. And there, there are NO commercial outlets where you could borrow use of the restrooms.
From Barstow to Primm (115 Miles) there are all of TWO rest areas which are almost ALWAYS closed (for “repairs” ha! ha! ha!)!
And it’s not exactly like there’s no room on the side of the road to build “facilities” !
PATHETIC !
