The family of the woman who was killed in a traffic collision on Valentine’s day has created a fundraiser to assist with funeral costs.
Joseph Hernandez, 27 of Santa Barbara, was driving his Nissan sedan with Selena Josefina Araiza, 24 of Santa Barbara, in the passenger seat. The couple was traveling southbound on Highway 1 near Santa Rosa Road on February 14 when a Honda sportscar traveling northbound crossed into oncoming traffic and struck them head-on.
Araiza was pronounced dead on the scene while Hernandez was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with critical injuries.
“Everyone who knew Selena, knew how wonderful, smart, beautiful & caring she was. She had a beautiful heart and loved everyone so much. She was living her best life with the love of her life Joseph and was very accomplished at everything she did,” her family stated.
Araiza had celebrated her birthday last month and was on her way to becoming a Registered Nurse (RN). She had just moved to Santa Barbara in September with Joseph and loved the area.
“We are left with her memory and I will never forget how much she was loved and the love she gave to us all,” her family wrote.

Hernandez is recovering from the collision after suffering multiple fractures of his elbow, wrist, pelvic bone, tibia, fibula and femur. He’s expected to undergo multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation therapy.

No arrests have been made against the driver who swerved into oncoming traffic causing the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
