Forward Progress Stopped in Vandenberg Brush Fire

Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to a brush fire near Vandenberg Village on Friday afternoon.

At 1:40 p.m., crews arrived on Santa Lucia Canyon Road at Klein Blvd. in Lompoc for a reported brush fire, named the Santa Lucia Fire. A 2nd Alarm response was called as the fire was spotting in 81 degree weather with 17 mph winds.

Evacuations were ordered for anyone west of Highway 1 and south of Constellation Road. Additional fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and engines were called for possible structure protection. 

At 3:30 p.m., the forward progress of the fire was stopped at 35 acres, according to SBCFD Public Information Officer Mike Eliason.

Around 4:45 p.m.,  all mandatory evacuation orders were lifted and structure protection engines and all fixed-wing aircraft were released.

Firefighters will remain on scene overnight mopping up stubborn hot spots.
